A
good building maintenance staff is always looking for
trouble--structural trouble that is. The reason is, serious problems
are not always obvious problems.
THE PROBLEM
This case study begins with a crack in the surface of a parking
deck at the University of Virginia's Carl Smith Center, home of Scott Stadium.
Investigation by Dunbar, Milby,
Williams, Pitman & Vaughan Consulting Engineers identified the
cause of the crack: a series of failed precast concrete Ts beneath the deck.
The south end of each T showed signs of structural failure--cracked and
broken patches that needed immediate remedy.

THE SOLUTION
Based on a good reputation for and experience in concrete restoration and
remediation, Richmond Primoid was invited to partner with Daniel &
Company, Inc. Here,
step-by-step, is how we rescued the structure.
Step 1
The steel plates connecting the north and south Ts
were burned
through and disconnected then the each T was jacked up as much as 1/4
inch to relieve pressure (right).
|
Step 2
Next, spalled concrete was cut away with extreme care not to break the reinforcing cable between
the Ts.

|
Step 3
The steel cable was treated with two coats of rust inhibitor and
the concrete was patched with polymer modified patching material
(below).

|

Step 4
Non-failure cracks are injected with low-viscosity epoxy (right). |

finished T (below).
 |
Step 5
To further strengthen the Ts, Richmond Primoid fabricated and
installed steel reinforcing beams
(below).

|
Step 6
Steel straps, welded to the bottom of the beams, were bolted to
the T (below).

|
Step 7
Finally, a 12-foot wide band of clear
methacrylate sealer was applied to the driving surface directly over
the repairs to inhibit future damage
(below).

THE RESULT
The collaboration between Daniel & Company, Inc., Dunbar, Milby, Williams, Pitman & Vaughan, and Richmond Primoid produced a solid,
cost-effective solution to a potentially serious problem in less than
half the time projected.
